Low Budget — South Africa, self-drive, flexible length
Kruger National Park is the rare place in Africa where a true safari doesn’t require a guide at all — the roads are paved and well-signed, sightings are radioed between cars at rest camps, and South African National Parks (SANParks) runs its own budget rest camps inside the park gates. This is the itinerary for travelers who’d rather put the savings toward more days in Africa than fewer nights at a nicer camp.
Fly into Johannesburg or Nelspruit, rent a standard sedan (a 4×4 isn’t required on Kruger’s main roads), and book SANParks rest camps like Skukuza or Lower Sabie directly — simple bungalows with shared or en-suite bathrooms, a communal kitchen or braai (grill) area, and a daily conservation fee that covers unlimited game drives you run yourself.
The trade-off is real: no expert guide spotting animals for you, and self-catering means grocery runs instead of a five-course dinner. What you get instead is total flexibility — stay an extra night anywhere, skip a rest camp you don’t like, and see the same lions, elephants, and rhinos as the $2,000-a-night camps thirty miles away.
Typical range: $40–$90 per night for lodging + park conservation fees, plus a rental car.
Sephari’s Travel Essentials collection carries the cooler bags, headlamps, and basic camp kitchen gear a self-catering Kruger trip actually needs.
