Bourbon Street is what first-time visitors expect New Orleans to be, and it’s the reason a lot of them leave without understanding why locals actually love this city. The real New Orleans is in the neighborhoods: Frenchmen Street’s live-music clubs (where actual New Orleanians go, blocks from the tourist strip), the Garden District’s oak-lined mansions, and the Bywater’s shotgun houses and independent galleries.

Food is not a side note here — it’s the itinerary. A proper visit works in a po’boy lunch, a real Creole dinner (not a tourist-menu version), and at least one meal built entirely around whatever’s in season at the farmers market, plus coffee and beignets that aren’t at the single most famous stand everyone photographs.

Time it around a second-line parade or a neighborhood festival if you can — New Orleans’ calendar of small, local celebrations happening almost every weekend is a better introduction to the city than any single landmark.
