Beyond Machu Picchu: The Sacred Valley on Your Own Terms

Machu Picchu earns its reputation, but most visitors treat it as a single rushed day trip from Cusco, missing that the Sacred Valley around it holds ruins nearly as striking with none of the crowds — Ollantaytambo’s still-inhabited Inca town, Moray’s mysterious circular terraces, and the Maras salt pans that have been worked since pre-Inca times.

Base in the Sacred Valley itself rather than Cusco for a few nights — at roughly 1,000 feet lower elevation, it’s meaningfully easier on altitude adjustment before tackling Cusco’s 11,000-foot air, and it puts you closer to the Ollantaytambo train station for Machu Picchu.
