About Sephari

Sephari starts with a place. We go to the clay town, the kiln village, the long road — and only then look at what the people there make for everyday life.

We are curators. We choose a small number of pieces for where they come from and how they are made, and we tell that story before we show you anything to buy. This site is where the places live. The shop, at shop.sephari.com, is where the pieces do.

Where we’ve been

  • Mexico: clay, from Talavera-style plates made by a family workshop in Mexico to the everyday ware of the Mixteca.
  • Australia: the road, and the things people make along it.
  • Japan: kiln towns — Bizen, Onta, Meizan — where rice bowls and plates are still made for the daily table.

How we choose

  • A real place and a real practice behind every piece
  • Things made to be used and kept
  • A maker who can tell us the story, in their own words
  • Honest about where a piece can be bought, and from whom

Roam first. Shop later.
